Chapter Twenty-Three

Shopping had turned sour. It was nobody's fault; just a gradual realisation on Diana’s part that something was shifting within her. Every topic of conversation had her mind wandering back to Shannon. And every time it did, it wandered further to memories of kissing her, and the last time she’d seen her, when kissing had become a heavy petting session that had taken them both by surprise.

“What’s wrong with you?” Zara had nudged her when they met back up for a break and a coffee together.

“Hm, what?” Diana said absently as the fog of fantasy dissipated.

“You’ve been stirring that coffee for three minutes.”

“Don’t exaggerate.” Claudia smiled. “It was barely two, but Zara’s right, is everything okay?”

Diana looked around the table at the three pairs of eyes currently staring at her, waiting for an answer, concern on all of their faces.

“Yes, of course.”

“Not very convincing,” Zara muttered, picking up her iced salted caramel latte and sipping through the paper straw.

“I’m fine. I was just thinking, that’s all.”

“About what?” Zara continued her cross-examination with a slight smirk on her face. “Are you thinking about—”

“Firstly, Zara, it’s none of your business, and secondly, it’s none of your business,” Diana said, feeling a little irked at the interrogation.

“Oo, touchy,” Zara continued to prod.

“Zara, pack it in,” Scarlett spoke up before Claudia could admonish her youngest daughter.

“Fine. I was just having some fun.”

“Yes, at my expense as usual,” Diana snapped. “You do know that sometimes it hurts my feelings.”

Zara sat up, her attention moving to her sister. The sister she loved dearly. “Di, I’m sorry, sometimes I forget that banter isn’t your forte.”

“Banter is my forte, I just choose who to banter with and know when it’s appropriate.”

Claudia reached for Diana’s hand. “Do you need to get some air? I could do with stretching my leg. I’m supposed to exercise it now the cast is off.”

Diana huffed and stood up. “Sure.”

As they walked away, Scarlett stared at Zara. “Why do you wind her up like that?”

Zara shrugged. “I dunno, we’ve always done it. She knows I’m only being playful.”

“That may be, but sometimes I think she needs us to be serious and give her the space to tell us what’s on her mind.”

“I know what’s on her mind, or should I say, who.”

“Then even more reason to give her a break and let her work her thoughts out without feeling like she’s the butt of everyone’s joke.”

Picking up her coffee, Zara sat back and slurped the last remnants of it from the bottom of the cup. “Do you think that’s how she feels, like she’s a joke?”

Scarlett nodded. “Sometimes, yes.” She leaned forward. “Think about it, who’s the one person who has been there for you other than your parents?”

“Diana, I guess Adam, too.”

“Right, and you never have to ask her to step up, she just does it and gets it done and you both know that she will, but instead of just saying thanks, you and Adam make little jokes at her expense.”

“Not all the time.
